I have long been under the impression that it was unlawful to take the life of any other person and that there were severe consequences awaiting the perpetrator. What is there that makes the prosecution and imprisonment of an illegal (or legal) immigrant into this nation different?

We have laws on the books — we need to simply enforce them, immediately and without apology.
